Chronicle 2023, Venerable Hsin Tao

2023 / 75 years-of-age

‧ In early January, Master Liao Yi, LJM Head Disciple Master, dean of the LJM Education Institute, and executive director of the World Religious Museum Development Foundation, passed away on January 6. In a video during the memorial service, Venerable Hsin Tao expressed his gratitude for Master Liao Yi's dedication to the promotion of Buddha teachings and founding of the LJM. 

‧ In early February, Venerable Hsin Tao attended the “Catholic Requiem Mass in Memory of Retired Archbishop Joseph Ti-kang” at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Taipei, mourning and remembering their cross-religious friendship.

‧ In early February, Venerable Hsing Yun, the founder and spiritual leader of Fo Guang Shan, passed away on February 5th. In memory of the profound teachings bestowed by the late master, a memorial service was held at Fo Guang Shan in Kaohsiung. On February 13th, Venerable Hsin Tao attended an event titled “In Commemoration of the 48th Patriarch Grand Master Hsing Yun's Nirvana Ceremony”, marking a farewell to Grand Master Hsing Yun, who shaved him and made him his disciple in 1973.

‧ In early February, Venerable Hsin Tao attended the "Love through Music Concert" jointly organized by the World Religious Museum Development Foundation, the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Taiwan, the Campus Ministry Office of Fu Jen Catholic University, and the non-governmental organization "Global Family for Love and Peace (GFLP)" at the Immaculate Conception Chapel of Fu Jen University. The concert aimed to offer prayers for the victims of the powerful earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, as well as for global peace. 

‧ From mid-February to early April, a monk and lay practitioner spring meditation retreat was held at the LJM Wu Sheng Monastery.
‧ In mid-March, there was a meeting at the LJM Wu Sheng Monastery with Ven. Talagala Sumanaratana Thero, Maha Sangha of Sri Lanka, to exchange international experiences in propagating Buddha Dharma.

‧ In mid-March, the Venerable took part in the "13th Pu Ren Award Ceremony" held at Fulong Fullon Hotel.

‧ In late March, there was a meeting at the LJM Wu Sheng Monastery with Zhichen Khenpo Rinpoche, the abbot of Kathok Zhichen Bairoling Monastery representing the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, and Jamyang Kunzang Longgya Rinpoche, the abbot of  Cuopu Temple in China’s Sichuan Province.


‧ In mid-April, the Venerable gave instructions to establish the "Spirituality is Ecology Task Force," aimed at consolidating resources of the LJM branches and promoting projects related to spiritual ecology.


‧ From mid-April to early May, the Venerable conducted his annual " Great Compassion Retreat 21" at the holy site of the Eleven-faced Bodhisattva Guanyin at the LJM Wu Sheng Monastery. The event culminated in the inauguration of the "Great Compassion Retreat Empowerment Ceremony" during which the "Sacred Thousand-Hand Bodhisattva Guanyin Attainment Practice" was conferred.


‧ From mid to late June, a "Chinese Buddhism Short-Term Monastic Precepts Retreat" was held at the  LJM Wu Sheng Monastery, with the Venerable serving as the preceptor for ordination.

‧ Late June - The 40th Anniversary of the LJM was marked and celebrated.

‧ From the end of June to early July, the Venerable led online meditation sessions for participants from Germany and Austria as part of the "European Meditation Retreat." 

‧ In late July, the Venerable conducted a preliminary retreat for the 2023 Water and Land Dharma Assembly in the holy site of the Eleven-faced Bodhisattva Guanyin at the LJM Wu Sheng Monastery.

‧ In mid-August, the Venerable  was invited to participate in the ninth Parliament of the World's Religions (PoWR) in Chicago, USA. Due to the concurrent initiation of the 2023 Water and Land Dharma Assembly, Venerable Hsin Tao was unable to attend in person and instead delivered a video address during the opening ceremony of the conference.

‧ In mid-August, the 30th LJM Water, Land, and Air Dharma Assembly was inaugurated at the Taoyuan Arena, with the theme "Compassionate Aspirations – Mutual Aspiration, Mutual Goodness, Mutual Inclusion."

‧ In late August, there was a meeting at the LJM Wu Sheng Monastery with Dr. Chang-Yu Lee, an international forensic expert, to exchange perspectives on spiritual ecology and the consensus on peace.

‧ In mid-September, the LJM monastics participated in the Autumn Meditation Retreat at the LJM Wu Sheng Monastery.

‧ In early October, the Venerable delivered an opening speech online at the "Fifth Guanyin Culture International Forum" held at the Nagoya International Exhibition Hall in Japan.

‧ In late October, a pilgrimage and meditation practice were organized in Nepal. During this period, the Venerable had the opportunity to meet with His Holiness the Twelfth Gyalwang Drukpa,the spiritual head of the 800-year-old Drukpa Order based in the Himalayas.


‧ From late October to early December, the "Fourth Life and Peace University Winter School Online Course" was conducted. The Venerable led online sessions on Peace Meditation and provided teachings during the program.

‧ In late October, the Venerable  attended the “LJM Board of Honorary Directors Certification Ceremony” and presented certificates to the newly appointed Honorary Directors.

In early November, the Venerable was invited to attend the “Global Faith Leaders COP28 Summit,” a pre-conference meeting for COP28 held in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. Venerable Hsin Tao delivered a speech and joined religious leaders in signing the joint statement titled “Confluence of Conscience: Uniting for Planetary Resurgence,” aiming to gather collective consciousness for the revival of the Earth.


‧ In mid-November, the Venerable was selected as one of the “Top Ten Influential Figures of New Taipei City in 2023.”

‧ In late November to early December, the “Eighth Theravada Short-Term Monastic Retreat and Offering to Ten Thousand Monastics in Myanmar '' was held at the LJM Maha Kusala Yama Monastery in Yangon.

‧ In early December, the Venerable was invited to attend the inauguration ceremony of the newly constructed "Hsin Tao Teaching Building" at Chiang Mai Loyalty High School in Thailand.

‧ From early December to late December, the annual Huayan (Avatamsaka) Dharma Assembly was initiated at the Sheng Shan Temple, Lower Monastery of the LJM.
