Master Hsin-tao Scaled Up Solitary Chan Meditation Retreat

- In January, Because beginning of sophisticated practice, Ling Jiou Mountain restricted entry for outsiders and visitors. This sophisticated practice (觀音的寂靜修 Avalokiteśvara Meditation) was to motivate four kinds of disciples (Bhikkhus, Bhikkhunis, Upashakas and Upashikas) to follow the Dhamma bravely toward Buddhahood, promote four stages of teachings accumulate wisdom of life, let the Dhamma continue in the world and sentient being live happy life.

Here it is important to elaborate the meaning of four kinds of teachings: The four kinds of teachings include the teaching of āgama, Prañā, Saddhamapuṇḍarīka, and Avatamsaka. These four kinds of teaching is one of special feature of Ling Jiou Mountain Buddhist practice. According to Chan Master Hsin-tao, āgama texts contain most basic and fundamental teaching of Buddhism which is also known for earliest recorded teaching of the Buddha. Most of Theravāda Buddhist practitioners follow āgama texts for their everyday practice. Following the earliest texts, āgama, one attains arahant stage which is highest state of attainment in Theravāda tradition. However, the other three teachings, Prañā, Saddhamapuṇḍarīka, and Avatamsaka, are considered as latter texts. These teachings are also known as Mahāyāna teachings which focus on the path of Bodhisattva practice. Those monks and nuns who follow Mahāyāna teachings they attain Boddhahood , which is the highest attainment. One of the special feature of Mahāyāna teachings is that those who choose this particular practice has to take Bodhisattva vows, which literary means accepting the rules to practice this path. The Bodhisattva vows emphasis to fulfill six pāramitās which means perfections, they are, giving or offering, discipline, patience, energy, meditation, and wisdom. Chan Master Hsin-tao always guide his disciples to follow four kinds of Buddhist teachings according to the sequence.
- In March, Master Hsin-tao was awarded by the highest honor in Myanmar “Mahā-ācārya Award”. At the end of award ceremony, several other local monks of Myanmar were awarded by the President Thein Sein and received donations. At the end of month, He was invited to participate in “21st Northern Thailand 329 Princess Cup Anti-Drug Youth Games”, which was organized by Re Shui-tang, Chiang Mai, Thailand. During this sports activity he introduced and led all to experience One Minute peace Chan.
- In April, invited to participate in “2nd Spirit of Humanity Forum” organized by Reykjavik City, the capital city of Iceland. In this forum Master Hsin-tao delivered lecture on the importance of love and compassion and led more than two hundreds of distinguished guest to experience Chan (Zen) meditation. After that, he went to Neumuhle meditation center in Saarbrücken, Germany, and conducted Chan (Zen) retreat. Continuing from 2011 to 2013, this is third time meditation retreat conducted at Neumuhle meditation center. At the end of the month, Master returned Ilan County,Taiwan to conduct first phase of 49-days retreat in Jiao-xi village, and then went near hill continued the second phase of 49-days retreat in June.
- In July, Matmo typhoon influenced Taiwan and caused aircraft crashed in Pen-ghu Island. Master Hsin-tao appealed the disciples to recite Mahā-Karunā mantra (Dhāraṇī Great Compassion Mantra) transfered merits to typhoon victims, and pray for those who were injured recover and back their life as soon as possible. At the end of the month, the Ling Jiou Mountain was preparing for the 21st Shui-lu Mahāpuja, during this time gas explosion incident occurred in Kaohsiung, south of Taiwan, therefore, Master Hsin-tao asked disciples to light candle and lights for the victims, and pray for injured so they could recover soon.
- At the end of July, the Wu Sheng Monastery of Ling Jiou Mountain was honored as “Most Meritorious Religious Group for Social Education Award”, for several years by New Taipei City Government. This year New Taipei City Govt. specially awarded eleven monks and nuns, including Master Hsin-tao, of ā Monastery for their individual contribution to social education. Venerable Miao-yung as the representative of Ling Jiou Mountain went to receive the award.
- In August, led the disciples and officer to join birthday ceremony of Master Hsing Yun at Fo Guang Shan and discussed how to manage the Sangha. In the same month, the online Buddhist Culture group visited Wu Sheng Monastery and Golden Buddha Garden (Golden Buddha Sanctuary) at Ling Jiou Mountain, and Master Hsin-tao delivered dhamma preaching in front of the main shrine (Founder’s Hall). In the same month, the Chinese Cultural Exchange Association from mainland China visited Ling Jiou Mountain and Master Hsin-tao conducted cross-strait Buddhist cultural exchange in association with Venerable Master Jing-yao Chairman, Chung-hwa International Merits Society of Buddha-puja and Sanghadāna, and Vice-president of Chinese Buddhist Association Venerable Master Sheng-hui. They all shared their view on the cross-strait promotion of Buddhism.
- In late August, received invitation from the Ministry of National Defense, R. O. C., Taiwan, to organize and assist the “The Chinese Expeditionary Force Memorial Tablets in Myanmar – a Ceremony for the Sacrifice and Welcoming Spirit”. This salvation ceremony (Mahāpujā) ritual presided by Master Hsin-tao, this puja was organized at the main battlefield of Myitkyina in Myanmar. In the same month, invited by An-hui Province Jiuhua Mountain Monastery to participate in the inauguration ceremony of Pai-sui temple Buddha statue initialing event cum Venerable Master Hui-qing promotion to Abbot Mahāpujā.
- In September, received invitation from Myanmar Buddhist promoter, Myanmar general council of Kokang (Kho-kan) association, via General Counsel Mr. Luo Xing-min’s referral, and went to Salween River Village Kokang Cultural association. Having grateful heart Master Hsin-tao shared future project of dhamma practice and peace plan in Naung Mon Village. Nu River ( Salween River 怒江又稱薩爾溫江)
- In October, following from 2009 and 2010, the third Shui-lu Mahāpujā was organized in Singapore. In this excellent Mahāpujā, the participants experienced the sense beyond arising and cessation.
- In December, took the Sangha members to Myanmar for pilgrimage. During this pilgrimage, Ling Jiou Mountain International Meditation Center, Yangon ( Dhama Wun Tha Kyaung Thit - Mahā Kusalā Yāma Monastery) organized second session of short term monastic ordination activity (短期出家). The Chancellor of Myanmar National Theravāda Pāli University, Venerable Ashin Kumara presided the ordination ceremony. Master Hsin-tao Went to Lashio, Naung Mon Village, his hometown (Lashio is the main city of Shan state which located at northern part of Myanmar), organized the First Sanghadāna ceremony.
