GFLP Partners with NYU for "Water Stories" Film Call: Empowering Global Youth Voice

Ling Jiou Mountain’s Global Family of Love and Peace (GFLP) has been spearheading the youth environmental media education project, "Climate! Film! Action!", for five consecutive years. Traditionally held around World Oceans Day (June 8), the program has expanded significantly this year through a collaboration with New York University (NYU). The partnership introduces a youth ocean film festival themed "Water Stories," which is currently accepting global submissions until April 10.

The project team envisions this theme as a platform where memories, emotions, and concerns regarding water from diverse cultural backgrounds can converge. By facilitating dialogues within a shared screening space, the initiative seeks to weave an environmental narrative that transcends both regions and generations. Furthermore, the team encourages young people in Taiwan to seize this opportunity to speak out for the environment through film and confidently step onto the international stage.

The LJM GFLP Youth Environmental Media Education Program, "Climate! Film! Action!", is dedicated to promoting environmental awareness by empowering Generation Z through imagery and storytelling, earning widespread acclaim for its achievements. This year, the program reached a significant milestone by being selected as a member of the New York City government's "Youth Action 50 (YA50)," identifying it as one of the city's 50 key public action organizations for empowerment.

The project team stated that this collaboration with New York University (NYU) will culminate in a physical film festival in New York, where winning works will be screened under the theme "Show Your Film on the Big Screen." The festival will feature three award categories—"Best Film," "Best Creative Idea," and "Most Impactful"—recognizing excellence in narrative integrity, innovative presentation, and the power to ignite environmental awareness. For young creators, having their work showcased in a professional venue with formal industry standards is an invaluable experience. Furthermore, the post-screening Q&A sessions offer a unique opportunity to engage with the audience firsthand, allowing creators to discover new layers and possibilities in their work through diverse perspectives, building confidence and inspiration for their future endeavors.

Such award-winning and screening experiences serve as a pivotal starting point and a compelling resume for young people aspiring to apply to related academic programs or pursue careers in film, media, and environmental advocacy. New York University (NYU) is a world-renowned institution that has nurtured countless exceptional talents, including the internationally acclaimed director Ang Lee, who is a distinguished alumnus.

The "Water Story" environmental film competition emphasizes originality and authentic perspectives, aiming to uncover the "raw voices" of youth rather than prioritizing professional cinematography or post-production polish. Consequently, technical proficiency is not the primary judging criterion. The project team envisions that these films will not only tell compelling stories about water but also harness the transformative energy of social activism.

Furthermore, "Water Stories" distinguishes itself from typical film festivals by offering substantial creative support to help participants refine their narratives into more compelling and persuasive stories. During the submission period, "Studio Open Days" are scheduled for February 27 and March 27. Participants are encouraged to bring their drafts to the LJM New York Zen Space to engage with the "Climate! Film! Action!" team. Through mutual observation and dialogue, these sessions aim to help creators clarify and polish their original stories to make them more impactful. In addition to in-person interactions, an online feedback mechanism is provided. Whether regarding creative direction or submission inquiries, dedicated personnel are available to offer immediate support and concrete suggestions throughout the preparation process.

The global call for "Water Stories" submissions is now officially open, inviting youth aged 14 to 26 to submit short films under 5 minutes in length. Whether it's a documentary, experimental film, animation, or poetic creation, any work that explores water through an authentic lens is welcome.
